school camps, where you used to learn to make fires, cook damper bread over them, sit around singing camp songs, pitch a tent, go on hikes and learn survival skills!!  your mum used to 'sneak' goodies into your backpack that you weren't supposed to have, and you told scary stories until all hours.

Making a "spider web" out of the entire class with wool...sounds silly but the teacher got into heaps of trouble for it at the time!! LOL we wound it up with wool for a whole week then the teacher cut it down due to the principle being a bit uptight...that was in standed 3/4 (yup, I am that old! lol) and my favouriate teacher was Mr Stevenson from Somerfield primary...he still works there!!  Ahhhh those were the day's...no PC rubbish :P

My favourite teacher was Miss Ashley in Standard 3.  She was AMAZING!  She had a puppet called Lambchops who would come out and talk to us.  I still have the puppet I made while I was in her class.  A very talented lady who, sadly, died too young!

  • Jill Ramsay

I enjoyed going to school in the 1950s. We wrote on slates with slate pencils, and sat on the floor because there were not enough desks. My teacher Miss Smith was a lovely woman who seemed to love us all. We were sorted into boys and girls but that did not worry us as we did not want to sit near each other any way. School was fun with lots of time to draw, do arithmetic with wooden rods, and reading time where the teacher read to us while we lay on our blankets for a rest in the afternoons. My only bad time at primary school was when I was shot in the eye with a bamboo arrow as the boys played Robin Hood and his Merry Men. Just imagine today if someone had a bamboo bow and arrow at school. All hell would break free. But I was a lucky girl, I did not have any lasting effects from the arrow so all turned out for the good in tne end. Jill Ramsay
